When Talonflame came to view the entire world, people see it as a cool awesome, fire hawk. What the completive ones saw was a bird with a 4x weakness that was bound to go to the realms of the NU. However when it was find out that Talonflame had access to moves like Brave Bird, Flare Blitz and Swords Dance, people see it as a unique bird  like Staraptor, however Talonflame put icing on the cake by its Hidden Ability. If you thought Tech Bullet Punch Scizor was bad enough, you now have a rampaging priority  bird that can slam Brave Birds in seconds. With Swords Dance, Roost and Flare Blitz, Talonflame has now become a respected threat. However, that doesn’t help that 50% health lost when Stealth Rocks are in the field, and Rotom-W, Heatran, and Rotom-H resist both of its moves, and huge threats such as Tyranitar and its Mega Evolution roaming around. Also that 81 based attack stat  isn’t going to do that much damage without a Swords Dance, Life Orb, or Choice Band. In the end, Talonflame is a whole new threat that Gen 6 has brought along us.

Banded-Flame

Talonflame @ Choice Band
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 4 Def
Nature: Adamant
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- U-Turn
- Return

This set is simple. Do as heavy damage as you can to the opponent. Brave Bird and Flare Blitz are the moves you are probably going to spam. With Brave Bird, you have a great revenge killer, while Flare Blitz hits things hard. U-turn is the scouting and predicting if a counter/check will come out. This will help you switch into a pokemon that stops the counter/check while still doing damage. Finally Return is there because it’s the next best thing it has.

Flame Strike

Talonflame @ Focus Sash
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird/ Acrobatics
- Flare Blitz
- Swords Dance
- Roost/ U-Turn/Return

Another simple set. The goal here is to try to use Swords Dance and then after proceed to cause damage. If you don’t the recoil of the powerful Brave Bird, you can go with Acrobatics for recoiless damage, but remember that you won’t do that much damage when you holding the sash. If you are going with Brave Bird, you can do some predicting with Roost, or go for a coverage move that Talonflame has.

Acrobat-wing

Talonflame @ Flying Gem
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Acrobatics
- Flare Blitz
- Roost

Abusing the move Acrobatics at its best. With Flying Gem, you can do huge damage and if you used Swords Dance before, it will be either heavy damage or a ko. Roost is to at least try to get health so you can use Flare Blitz when in need.

Other Options:

You have a couple of them. You have Flail if you are using a Focus Sash. There is also Will-o-Wisp but there are better users. You can use Life Orb as well but be careful of the Recoil damage from Brave Bird and Flare Blitz and you will be using Roost more often. You can go with Tail Wind if you want you teammates to go faster.

Counters:

Gale Wings Talonflame can cause all kinds of problems but not enough to be that uber-like threat. First there is Stealth Rock. Add Stealth Rock with the recoils from Flare Blitz and Brave Bird and Talonflame’s life span will be very limited. Pokemon such as Tyranitar and Rotom-Wash can easily take the hit and OHKO with Stone Edge and Hydro Pump respectively. Pokemon such as Hippowdon and Heatran can wall Talonflame and can set up Hazards. Also Tyranitar and Hippowdon with the ability Sand Stream also hurts Talonflame. Getting poisoned also means getting  limiting its life span even more.
